Simple as One, Two, Click
Gas light in car starting blinking.“Siri, find the closest gas station near me” says I. Siri replies, “ Okay, the closest gas station is 2.5 miles east from your location” Without a sweat, I’m on my way to get gas. Now of days, asking your phone where the closest gas station is can be done with just a push of a button. Before the 20th century, more like in early 1800’s, maps were used to locate a certain destination or merely asking someone for directions could do the trick. Not anymore, phones allow people to gps to their desired location. Technology has made existence in modern times comfortable. Information is now easily accessible through the Web and tasks that once took days to complete are done in hours.
In 2015, more than one-third of Americans are obese. You can say that this is due to poor eating diets, but according to Tim Wu it’s because of technology. In As Technology Gets Better, Will Society Get Worse?, Wu brings up a group called Oji-Cree. These group of people underwent a rapid transition of advanced technology. Wu states, “Since the arrival of new technologies, the population has suffered a massive increase in morbid obesity, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes” ( Wu 2). At first glance, it makes sense to blame technology. However, analyzing it, the people part of Oji-Cree were consumed in their own pleasures. The Oji-Cree lifestyle was replaced and hard manual labor was no longer necessary. They fell in the comfort and pleasures advanced tech brought and weren’t realizing the effects. Wu also states, “ The problem with technological evolution is that it is under our control and, unfortunately, we don’t always make the best decisions”( Wu 3). Thus, technology isn’t the problem. Desire and comfort through technology caused the group Oji-Cree to see hardship. They couldn't open their eyes and notice how they were consumed by their ease and satisfaction it brought.
Those against technology only see the cons it brings. In the article, Is Google Making Us Stupid? by Nicholas Carr, Carr states, “ They supply the stuff of thought, but they also shape the process of thought. And what the Net seems to be doing is chipping away my capacity for concentration and contemplation”( Carr 2). He explains how the web as affected our brains abstract thinking and cognitive mind set. Carr is one of many believers of how advanced tech has created more problems than solutions. Believers of anti-tech think it causes people to become sluggish, non-abstract thinkers, desideratum to tech, and causes society to become reliable to it. That fact is, technology brings happiness and revolutionizes everything around us. Due to each advancements in tech, medicines and medical tools were crafted to save lives. Furthermore, Society revolves around technology and it isn't that fact that technology is moving fast but the consumers within a society who cause technology to rapidly evolve. Wu states, “ our technological identities are determined by what companies decide to sell based on what they believe we, as consumers, will pay for”(Wu 3.) Therefore, as Wu stated, consumers are those in command and society’s views just adapt to each change.
Advancements in technology is beneficial to all of humanity. The Web offers accessibility in minutes. For example, a student can easily look up an information to help them complete a research assignment or aid in a math problem they are stuck on. Also someone can google steps to fixing a flat tire without having any knowledge of a car or calling for assistance . Additionally, people can stay connected with one another or spread awareness faster through the use of technology. Businesses can flourish and now paperless statements can be viewed online which limits the use of paper which stops trees from being cut down. Technology is today’s world and tomorrow is just a barrier that holds back it’s limitations.
